History of Lebanon County - Swatara Institute
The following is reproduced from the 1875 Atlas of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania
The Swatara Institute is located at Jonestown, on a beautiful rising piece of ground on the outskirts of the borough. The original building, which was destroyed by fire during the past winter, was a fine structure, and a credit to the town in which it was located, but its enterprising and undaunted Proprietor and Principal, Prof. E. J. Koons, has already erected on its site, a building which for beauty of design and finsih, stands first among all Educational Institutions erected by private enterprise in the county. The great natural beauty of location, together with its extreme healthfulness, and the fact that it is conducted on the family system, with its thorough method and strict discipline, is destined to make it eminently popular. It is easily reached by the Lebanon and Tremont R. R. and is very near the South Mountain R. R. It is undoubtedly one of the best boarding schools in Pennsylvania. All communications should be addressed to Prof. Edward J. Koons, Jonestown, Pennsylvania.
